Athletics update

The winter athletics season is in full swing and both basketball programs are competing in conference play. The women's basketball team got off to a nice start beginning the season at 8-3 prior to opening MASCAC play. January also marks the start of preseason practice for three spring programs: baseball, softball, and women's lacrosse. All three programs will begin play over spring break in Florida. View full schedules at athletics.mcla.edu.

MCLA will continue its tradition of hosting a National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration, which is entering its 26th year in existence! This year's celebration is being held on Saturday, January 30 and will culminate with the basketball doubleheader featuring the Trailblazers battling the Worcester State Lancers.

Although the Trailblazers' fall season has ended, the awards continue to come in. Volleyball head coach Amanda Beckwith '03, M.Ed. '13 was selected as the ECAC New England Coach of the Year, and junior Allison Clark was named All New England. In women's soccer, head coach Deb Raber's team was honored with the Silver Award for Ethics by the NSCAA, and senior Alexi Anderson was named to the All New England team for her on field efforts in 2015.

MCLA Presents!
The Blind Date Project
Co-presented with Williams College

February 5 & 6, 8 p.m.
Hops & Vines
Williamstown, MA

The apprehension of going on a blind date is suddenly compounded when a group of people — you, the audience — gather to witness an improvised meeting between two complete strangers in a karaoke bar. Guided only by text messages and phone calls and interspersed with random songs, each performance promises to be as unpredictable as it is dangerous.

Paul J. Groff Jr. ’15

In 2015, Paul J. Groff Jr. ’15, of Mechanicville, New York, found himself on stage, about to sing one of two solos in front of hundreds of people at the International Competition for Collegiate A Capella (ICCA) in Boston. Perhaps best known for its inclusion in the Pitch Perfect movies, the ICCA invited MCLA’s a capella group, the Allegrettos, to perform.

“I felt like a natural. I wasn’t really nervous anymore. I gave it my all,” Paul said. “It was probably one of the best things I did at MCLA – besides research conferences.”

While at MCLA, Paul served as an admissions ambassador and as secretary to the Education Club. In addition, he co-founded and served as the president of the Sociological Society club.

MCLA Berkshire Cultural Resource Center is now in the running to bring a 10-week live music series to North Adams during the summer of 2016.
Sponsored by Levitt Pavilions, the national nonprofit behind the largest free concert series in America, MCLA Berkshire Cultural Resource Center hopes to qualify as one of the 15 winning organizations competing in the Levitt AMP North Adams Grant Awards.
The Levitt AMP North Adams Grant Awards are an exciting matching grant opportunity created by Levitt Pavilions to serve small to mid-sized towns and cities up to 400,000 people. Fifteen nonprofits, or municipalities partnering with a nonprofit, will receive up to $25,000 each in matching funds to produce their own Levitt AMP Music Series—an outdoor, free concert series featuring a diverse lineup of professional musicians.
MCLA Berkshire Cultural Resource Center submitted the proposal for North Adams. The proposed venue site is Colegrove Park. North Adams’s proposal is now posted on the Levitt AMP website for public voting. http://levittamp.org
A successful campaign for MCLA Berkshire Cultural Resource Center depends on community participation to get as many online votes as possible to bring the concert series to town. Community support, as measured by the number of online votes received, will be one of the key factors when Levitt Pavilions selects the 15 winners.
WE NEED YOUR HELP to choose the Top 20 finalists! Voting opens today November 2, so Spread the word and rally your friends, family, colleagues and neighbors to vote for 2016 Levitt AMP North Adams!
Supporters are asked to visit https://grant.levittamp.org/voter-registration-page/ to register and vote. Online public voting is now open and ends Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The Top 25 finalists will be selected through online public voting. Levitt Pavilions will then review the proposals of these 25 finalists and the 15 Levitt AMP winners will be announced on January 5, 2016.
MCLA’s Berkshire Cultural Resource Center, the City of North Adams Office of Tourism and Community Events, and MASS MoCA want to expand access to high-quality, family-friendly music in North Adams.  We’ll use the Levitt AMP North Adams Grant to bring ten weeks of awesome music in August, September, and October 2016 to the newly renovated Colegrove Park in the heart of downtown North Adams.
MCLA Berkshire Cultural Resource Center asks supporters to start spreading the word to family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors and rally the community to sign up and vote for MCLA Berkshire Cultural Resource Center’s proposal.
